Gordon Ramsay has been involved in a bike accident in the US that has left him with severe bruising, with the chef saying he is lucky to be alive.

In a post on Instagram Ramsay said that he had been involved in an accident while riding his bike in Connecticut. While he said he did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries in the video he lifts up his chef's jacket to show a deep purple bruise across much of his torso, demonstrating the severity of the accident.

He also posted an image of his damaged cycle helmet as a result of the accident, saying that wearing a helmet saved his life.

"I’m doing ok and did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries but I am a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato," Ramsay wrote in a post. "I’m thankful for all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawerence + Memorial Hospital in New London who looked after me and checked me out, but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life."

In the accompanying video the chef said it had been "a brutal week" and that he was "lucky to be standing here" before imploring cyclists to always wear a helmet and wishing people a happy Fathers' Day.

Ramsay has a busy year ahead in the UK. Next year he will open five new venues at 22 Bishopsgate in London, including a second, smaller iteration of his flagship three star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, his Lucky Cat and Bread Street Kitchen, brands and The Gordon Ramsay Academy.
