In a statement, the group credited the extension to the ‘overwhelming support’ from landlords Ballymore and Hammerson, as well as the local community, its key stakeholders including Greater London Authority (GLA) and London Boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, and its loyal customers.
Restaurant first reported last month that Boxpark had secured a short-term lease to continue trading from its Shoreditch outpost.
It followed an announcement last summer that the group was preparing to close the site after its landlord announced its intention to trigger a break clause in the lease.
“The support we’ve received from the community has been nothing short of inspiring,” says Ben McLaughlin, Boxpark COO.
“The extension of our lease provides certainty to the 47 small, independent businesses, and hundreds of their employees across our Shoreditch site.
“We are absolutely thrilled to continue our journey in Shoreditch and remain committed to providing a platform for independent businesses and a vibrant space for our customers.”
Boxpark Shoreditch launched at the Bishopsgate Goodsyard site near Shoreditch High Street station back in 2011 as a ‘meanwhile use’ scheme.
The group, which operates other London sites in Croydon, Wembley and Camden, as well as a location in Liverpool, reached the expiration of its lease in Shoreditch early last year and notice on the premises was subsequently served by landlords Bishopsgate Goodsyard after planning permission was granted by the Mayor of London for the redevelopment of the 4.5 hectare site.
Boxpark subsequently entered into negotiations to extend occupancy of the site and a campaign to save the Shoreditch site was also launched.
Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, which spearheaded the Save Shoreditch Boxpark Campaign, says the extension represents a ‘significant victory for independent businesses and the local community’.
“Boxpark has long been a cornerstone of the area’s vibrancy, supporting hundreds of jobs and generating invaluable economic activity,” he adds.
“The overwhelming support from landlords Ballymore and Hammerson, local authorities, and the Greater London Authority is a testament to the venue’s integral role in the community.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who backed the Save Shoreditch Boxpark Campaign. Your unwavering support ensures that this iconic venue can continue to provide a platform for small businesses and a lively gathering space for all.”
