The group has secured a former retail site set within a Grade II-listed building on Ship Sheet in The Lanes for its first restaurant outside of the capital, which is set to launch in May.
Founder Sugen Gopal, who opened his first Roti King restaurant in Euston in 2014, describes Brighton as having ‘a special place in his heart’.
“There’s an energy to the city that makes it one of my favourite places to eat out in the UK,” he says.
“The Lanes, with its independent spirit and incredible food culture, feels like the perfect home for Roti King outside of London.
“I can’t wait to share our food with such a passionate and knowledgeable community.”
Roti King’s menu is centred on its signature roti canai, which is served with either dhal, chicken, mutton, or fish kari.
Other dishes to feature include char kway teow, chewy rice noodles stir-fried with prawn and egg; and Malaysian fried chicken that’s marinated in garlic, ginger, and lemongrass, crisped with cornstarch and rice flour, and served with homemade sambal.
The group’s Brighton restaurant will hold 50 covers with interiors inspired by Malaysian street art.
Gopal created the first iteration of Roti King at Oriental City (now Bang Bang Oriental) in Colindale.
After the site was shut by developers he took the opportunity to open his own restaurant in Euston.
He subsequently expanded to Battersea Power Station and Waterloo in 2023, and then Spitalfields in 2024.
Brighton will be Roti King’s fifth site in total.
Gopal also owns and operates a grab-and-go offshoot called Gopal’s Corner, which has sites within in Market Halls Canary Wharf, Oxford Circus, Victoria and Paddington, as well as an outpost in Westfield London.
