Supermarket chain Co-op is moving into the foodservice sector with a new ‘on the go’ brand that offers a range of hot food options including pizzas cooked to order.

The first Co-op on the go store opened yesterday (31 July) in Solihull, with a further 15 sites set to launch in the coming months.

Co-op plans to open several hundred on the go locations in the next two to three years.

Each store will range from 600 to 1,000sq ft with opening times of 7am to 7pm and will sell a selection of food and drink to-go options to cater to different parts of the day, complemented by new products exclusive to the concept.

These include breakfast items including granola pots, hot porridge and sandwiches made fresh for customers in the morning using Co-op’s first ever over-the-counter service.

A new selection of deli items will be available for lunch such as smoked salmon, egg and spinach pots, sweet potato bhaji wrap, and teriyaki chicken salad bowls.

Co-op Irresistible pizzas will also be offered to consumers for lunch and dinner and, in another first for the group, will be cooked in store on demand.

“We are always looking at new ways to deliver convenience to our members and customers and these new stores are a perfect example of us using our expertise to refine our on the go offer so it is focused on giving shoppers exactly what they need, when they need it,” says Matt Hood, Co-op Food MD.

“It’s a brand-new concept, which we believe there is a big demand for and which we can meet with delicious products, quick service, good value and spot on locations.”

The next phase of development for the on the go concept will see the stores turn to ‘dark trading’ in the evening, with pizzas being cooked and delivered as it looks to compete against foodservice operators and build on its quick commerce operations.

Hot and cold drinks will also make up the new format’s offer, including wines and ready to drink single-serve cocktails.

“I’m excited to see this evolution of Co-op stores join our traditional convenience stores across the UK,” adds Hood.
