Food hall operator Blend Family is to redevelop the Custard Factory site in Birmingham.

Called Alfred Works, the 17,500sq ft venue in Digbeth will be home to 15 kitchens, a large outdoor courtyard that will be the group’s biggest yet, social gaming, and a children’s area, alongside a further 10,000sq ft of indoor-outdoor events space across the River Rea.

It will also house Blend Family’s second Culinary Foundation Kitchen, supporting its work to tackle food poverty, as well as the third location of independent retailer The Cream Store.

“Alfred Works is built for Birmingham. By the people, for the people. It’s a space where kids can play, friends can gather, and stories can be shared over a pint or a plate,” says CEO Matt Bigland.

“We’re building more than a food hall. We’re building a home.”

Blend Family operates sites in Sheffield, Salford Quays, and London. It is soon to open Tower Bridge Collective, a 16,000sq ft food hall located on the ground floor of a net zero carbon development by FORGE Partnership next to Tower Bridge that will bring together 13 globally-inspired food partners.
