The North-Eastern Chef-restaurateur is to open three restaurants in the next year, starting in Fenwick in March

North-Eastern Chef-Restaurateur Terry Laybourne is opening a Café 21 restaurant in Fenwick department store at the beginning of March. Located on the first floor of the store, the 78-seater restaurant will look out over Northumberland Street, Newcastle, and will be the first of three restaurant openings for Laybourne this year.

He said, "We are aiming to establish a stylish and cool environment with high quality, cosmopolitan food at affordable prices. We will cater for those people who fancy a mid-morning caffeine kick, a relaxing lunch or a late afternoon glass of wine." It will be open daytimes only in the first place, although it may open in the evenings in the future, said Laybourne.

The move follows the trend for decent restaurants within shops, including Stephen Doherty's 1st Floor Café at Lakeland Limited in Windermere, Olive Peyton's Meals at Heal's in London, and Habitat and Waterstone's have both recently upped the standard of their cafés. John Lewis is also opening a second restaurant, a more relaxed, tapas-style restaurant for adults only, compared to A Place to Eat on its fifth floor, aimed at families.

Laybourne also plans to relocate his Café 21 restaurant, currently on Queens Street in Newcastle, to the new Trinity Gardens development on the city's Quayside in May, which will allow him to increase capacity to 130 covers.

He will also open Caffe Vivo on the Quayside in July, in the £4.5m Live Theatre complex.

Laybourne already runs Bistro 21 in Durham and Jesmond Dene Hotel in Newcastle.
