Rising Star: Carl Fleischer
Our hospitality student of the month tells us about his inspirations and aspirations as he prepares for a career in the industry

Every month we bring you an insight into the hottest catering and hospitality talent of the future in our Rising Stars section. This month Rotherham College student Carl Fleischer talks about his inspirations and aspirations as he prepares for a career in the industry.

Name: Carl Fleischer

Age: 19

Course title and college: Level 3 NVQ in Hospitality Supervision, Rotherham College

When do you graduate?: May 2009

When did you first realise you wanted to work in hospitality?: I was at secondary school. I wanted to be a chef at first, but when I started the course I realised I wanted to focus on the management side of things. I like to be with the customers, so I didn`t want to be stuck behind doors in the kitchen.

What has been your biggest achievement to date?: I came third in the Midlands heat of this year`s UK Barista Championship, which I was really pleased with, because I was the only student there and I don`t make coffee all the time. I think it was quite an achievement because everyone else there works in the industry and I came sixth last year, so I`m improving. I`m really hoping I go through to the final.

Where would you most like to work when you graduate?: I`m probably going to leave Rotherham and go to London because in my opinion it`s got the best choice of restaurants. I`d love to work in one of Gordon Ramsay`s restaurant`s. A lot of people see him as a just TV chef, but I think he`s a great businessman too. He`s opened restaurants all over the world and he`s given a lot of opportunities to his staff so I think it would be good to work for him.

What are you looking forward to most when you graduate?: Moving out of Rotherham and going to London to get a decent job. I just want to get stuck into something and start learning first hand about what it`s like to work in a restaurant. I think there`s a lot more to learn from working in the industry rather than just being a student.

What do you think will be the biggest challenge: Getting a job that will be able to give me the experience I need to make it as a restaurant manager.
