The Wheatsheaf pub in London’s Borough Market has re-opened after a three-year closure and ‘complete overhaul’ by owner Young’s.

New features of the 150-capacity pub on Stoney Street include the  ‘Eatsheaf campervan kitchen’ set on a new heated terrace, the ‘Wheatsheaf bicycle’ which houses blankets, a screen with a live feed of  the nearby London Bridge station and a mix-and-match food ordering system.

“The Wheatsheaf has an incredible sense of history and heritage, and an eclectic mix of loyal customers,” said Patrick Dardis, retail director for Young’s. “It’s the perfect spot for locals and visitors to the market alike, and with this fresh new look, long may it continue.”

Originally built in 1772, the Victorian pub’s new look has remained sensitive to its roots; with more traditional features such as wooden paneling and a large fireplace offset by contemporary touches in a bid to give the Wheatsheaf a home-from-home feel.

On the menu

The pub is now overseen by area manager Penny Spence and bar manager Tom Bowan and offers a selection of craft beers, ales, ciders and wines. The range on-tap includes Meantime Pale Ale, Camden Hells Lager and Young’s own cask ales such as Double Chocolate Stout and Stoney’s Gold. Bottles include the likes of Estrella Damm, Brooklyn Lager and Banana Bread Beer.

Food at The Wheatsheaf Borough Market comes courtesy of the Eatsheaf Campervan, which cooks street food-inspired dishes to order out on the new terrace. The menu is priced at £10-£20 for main courses and includes baked Hay Box Ham, Sticky English Whiskey Ribs and Cyder Spit Chicken, which is marinated overnight in Aspall’s cyder then rotisserie roasted.

An array of side dishes such as macaroni cheese, golden beetroot slaw and spiced haricot baked beans are also available. Meals are served in retro enamel tins together with a range of homemade sauces. The bar menu (£3-4) includes pork and sage sausage rolls, hen’s legs and husks of corn.
