The British public is spending over £1b per month on dining out at independent restaurants, according to a new report.

UK diners are spending an average of £44 per month at local independent restaurants, with 49 per cent of people claiming that independent restaurants are their favourite places to eat out at.

The research, carried out by VoucherCodes.co.uk, also highlights that 34 per cent of people favour their local cafés and pubs, while half of the 2,000 UK adults surveyed say that they prefer to spend their money on a local level.

James Tolland, Director at Hi-Life, a dining club that has just announced a partnership with VoucherCodes.co.uk, said that the research follows a period where the source of our food is in the spotlight.

“There is increasing attention paid to where our food is sourced and with so much fantastic local produce on offer at our doorsteps, it is really positive to see British people getting behind their local communities by supporting local independent restaurants,” he said.

Claire Davenport, managing director at VoucherCodes.co.uk, said that it’s important to help local businesses and that the website’s partnership with Hi-Life will help that.

“The club’s focus on finding the hidden gems on the UK dining scene and supporting local independents and communities really appealed to us, as we aim to support independent businesses as well as provide a large range of choices to our customers,” she said.

“We hope our users make the most of the new partnership and use it as an excuse to explore the culinary delights their area has to offer.”
