Burrito chain Chilango is preparing for further expansion both in the capital and across the UK, with a pipeline of openings planned for the next year.

The Mexican-inspired restaurant group, which currently operates 10 restaurants across London and Manchester as well as four delivery kitchens, says it is looking for new regional locations as well as further sites in London.

A recent trial of a digital-only kitchen at the chain’s Boxpark Croydon site will act as a test bed for further digital growth and development, with the group looking to explore new ways of bringing the Chilango experience to customers.

It comes as the group, which was sold out of administration last year to investment group RD Capital Partners, announces the appointment of former Shake Shack managing director Nigel Sherwood as non-executive board director.

Sherwood, who is also the current chief operating officer at Wagamama, will work alongside Chilango managing director Richard Franks to drive the business forward following the challenges of the pandemic.

“I am delighted to be involved in yet another business with so much potential," says Sherwood.

"I have been impressed with Chilango’s performance in recent months, especially in the midst of a pandemic, and I look forward to supporting Richard and the RD Capital Partners team in their ambitious plans for the future.”

Ahead of the next period of growth, Chilango is also currently recruiting for a a new head of people and culture.

“We are hugely excited to have Nigel on board," says Franks.

"His wealth of experience in the hospitality sector is invaluable and I can’t think of anyone better to help guide our growth and support our aim to continually improve. He is a perfect fit for our plans going forward.”

Chilango was founded by former Skype employees Eric Partaker and Dan Houghton in 2007.
