Estrella Damm to open first UK brewery in Bedford
Estrella Damm is to open a UK brewery, marking the first time the Spanish beer will made outside the Iberian Peninsula in its 150-year history.

The Times reports that Damm, the beer producer behind Estrella Damm, is investing €60m (£50m) in building a state-of-the-art brewery in Bedford.

Details published by law firm Taylor Wessing reveals that Damm has acquired the Eagle Brewery site, which was previously owned by Carlsberg Marston.

A spokesman for Damm told The Times: “The UK is the most important market for Estrella Damm outside its home country.

“This investment in Bedford, where we will be producing some formats, reflects our long-term commitment to the country and our devotion to UK consumers.

“Bedford is strategically located within the UK. Its proximity to London makes the location very attractive for us.”

The Damm brewery in Barcelona can be traced back to 1876, when August Kuentzmann Damm left his native Alsace and, with his cousin Joseph Damm, began brewing and marketing Strasburger beer.

The brewery remains in family control and is led by Demetrio Carceller Arce, a billionaire who inherited the business from his father.
