Nick Stephens, Hanna Sinclair-Stephens and Oliver Dixon opened The Gun on Well Street in Hackney in June 2014 after an extensive renovation that retained many of the building’s original Victorian features from 1860.
The pub had hosted kitchen residencies over the years including Ling Ling’s, which built a loyal following for its Chinese food and Sunday roasts, and modern British restaurant Rake, led by Jay Claus, Peter Ward, and Syrus Pickhaver.
It was also known for is programme of DJ-led events.
It narrowly avoided closure in 2020 during the pandemic and was saved by a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than £30,000 in just one day.
In 2021 The Gun released a compilation album to once again help to fund keeping the pub open and support local charity.
Islington pub The Compton Arms continues to trade under Locals Group directed by landlords Stephens and Sinclair Stephens.
“The Gun has faced many challenges over the years, and despite our very best efforts it has become unsustainable to continue trading,” says Stephens.
“Locals Club would like to extend our warmest thanks to our loyal staff, locals and the many DJs who helped create such a special community at the pub.
“We hope the future brings an opportunity for Locals Club to create another music-led pub in another location.
“For now, we’ll be focusing on our thriving Islington pub, The Compton Arms.”
