Marugame Udon has signed a master franchise agreement with Karali Group that it says will accelerate its growth across the UK and Ireland.

Under the new partnership, Karali Group will lead the development of new Marugame Udon restaurants and has acquired and assumed operation of the existing estate, transitioning the brand from corporate-owned to a fully franchised model.

Marugame Udon is one of Japan’s biggest restaurant brands and arrived in the UK in 2021 by way of a joint venture between Toridoll Holdings Corporation and Capdesia Group, with the latter subsequently exiting its investment in July last year.

It’s UK estate currently encompasses eight restaurants in London and a single regional site in Reading.

“Since introducing Marugame Udon to the UK in 2021, we have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome from customers,” says Victor Misawa, president of Marugame Udon International.

“Today, Marugame Udon proudly serves thousands of udon lovers every day, each bowl prepared fresh in our lively open kitchens.

“With nine restaurants now open, we’re thrilled to partner with Karali Group to bring our brand to even more communities. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our amazing team members, partners, and customers.

“This is just the beginning of an exciting new era for Marugame Udon.”

Karali Group, which is led by Salim Janmohamed and Karim Janmohamed, is a diversified, multi-national hospitality and real estate platform operating franchises in the fast-food, casual dining and hospitality sectors.

It counts Taco Bell and Crosstown Doughnuts among its UK portfolio.

“We are delighted to announce this landmark partnership with Marugame Udon and the acquisition of such a fantastic estate of restaurants,” says Karim Janmohamed.

“We look forward to continuing to create incredible guest and team member experiences as we grow the brand and welcome them all to the Karali family.”

A carefully managed transition is underway that the group says will ensure continuity for both customers and team members.

Sam McIntyre, interim CEO and finance director, will support the handover before moving to a new leadership role with Marugame Udon USA.
