Salad bar brand Tossed says it is targeting plans to open 50 sites nationwide in next four years having signed its first franchise partner.

The group, which operates 13 sites across central London, has partnered with Goldbean Limited, led by Badar Zaman, a lifelong hospitality operator with 20 years multi-site franchise experience with Costa Coffee.

Andy Hulbert of Bee Smart advised Tossed.

The first store under the franchise agreement will open in central Nottingham in the summer, marking Tossed’s first venture outside of the capital.

“Nottingham is a vibrant, growing city with a booming student population and a strong foodie culture,” says Zaman.

“Tossed’s focus on fresh, nutritious food and bold, modern branding really aligns with my own lifestyle and will be perfect fit for this location.

“My family and I are seeking to build something together here that we can be proud of and Tossed is exactly that. We believe it has huge potential for growth.

“We’re excited to open our first store and have plans for several more.”

Tossed announced in January this year that it was seeking franchise partners under plans to grow its footprint nationwide.

The group collapsed into administration in 2020 amid the impact of the first Covid-19 lockdown and was subsequently acquired by its former managing and commercial directors Neil Sebba and Angelina Harrisson.

Tossed was originally founded by Vincent McKevitt and opened its first site in Paddington in 2005.

“We are delighted to sign Badar as our first franchisee,” says Sebba.

“We feel he is the perfect fit for us: his regional knowledge, experience and enthusiasm will be invaluable to ensuring its success as a platform for his further expansion.

“We received extremely positive local feedback from the public in Nottingham, and we’re excited to be opening our first store there.

“This promises to be the first of many; we are targeting 50 franchise stores to be opened over the next four years, and Badar is an ideal partner with a great first location.”

Speaking to The Observer last year, Sebba revealed that Tossed was expected to turn a profit in its 2024 financial year for the first time since it went bust.

At the time he said revenues were expected to hit more than £9m, up from £7.4m last year.
