Batting overseas: Kricket to make its New York restaurant debut

Kricket will become the latest UK-born Indian restaurant to run a residency in the US, pointing to a potential permanent move for the brand.

The Indian restaurant group, founded by Will Bowlby and Rik Campbell, is running a two-night pop-up at Comal restaurant in New York on 6-7 October serving a menu of Kricket dishes created in collaboration with the Lower East Side Mexican restaurant.

A set menu will be available for $90 per guest plus tax for the meal, which will mark Kricket’s first foray into the New York dining scene.

Speaking to Restaurant last year, Bowlby and Campbell said that future expansion would likely involve moving internationally, with the US a potential target. “Indian food outside of India is at its best here in the UK,” said Bowlby. “When you compare it to another city in the world London does it the best, but there is a desire for better Indian restaurants in many other cities.

“There are opportunities in the Middle East and New York is also a really interesting but scary prospect.”

Moving across The Pond

The move mirrors that of Dishoom, which ran a sold-out pop-up at New York restaurant Pastis in August last year. The popularity of the pop-up was a factor in the Indian restaurant group’s decision to open a permanent restaurant in New York, which is expected to open next year.

Indian restaurateur Asma Khan also recently participated in a one-night pop-up at New York restaurant Dhamaka in April this year, fuelling speculation that she is also looking to open something in the city.

They will all, however, be beaten to it by Indian restaurant group JKS. The group, which has already brought its Berenjak Iranian brand to DUMBO House in New York will open a second site of its Ambassadors Clubhouse Indian restaurant within the 1245 Broadway building in Manhattan’s NoMad district in the autumn.

This will be followed in the winter by the launch of Gymkhana within the ARIA Resort & Casino on Las Vegas Boulevard.
