Gizzi Erskine is returning to London’s Mare Street Market as chef creative director, developing ‘revitalised’ menus across both its sites and launching a new health concept.

Mare Street Market’s dining halls in Hackney and Kings Cross will serve menus developed by Erskine from November that will produce-led, French-Americana brasserie dishes.

Erskine will also take the reins of the Mare Street Market delicatessen, which will serve a new menu of deep-filled focaccia sandwiches and ‘bold salads’.

She will also oversee a line-up of pop-ups and guest residencies featuring industry friends from home and away across both sites, and later launch an ‘all-new health concept’.

Alongside Barworks owner Marc Francis-Baum, who continues to lead the business, Erskine was originally billed as Mare Street Market’s co-founder when it launched in Hackney in 2018.

At the time it was expected that she would launch a restaurant as part of the project, but those plans never came to fruition and Erskine subsequently left the business.

“Mare Street Market is my home,” says Erskine of her return.

“It has my DNA in the walls, and it feels natural to come back.

“Marc and I have always been connected in its vision, and I look forward to being part of re-establishing Mare Street Market in Hackney and Kings Cross as some of the most important food and cultural spaces in London.”

Mare Street Market launched its Kings Cross outpost in November 2023.

Earlier in the summer, the Kings Cross site notably became home to Island, a new surf and turf restaurant concept developed by chefs Brad Carter and Tom Brown.

“Mare Street Market continues to grow as an emporium of talent,” says Francis-Baum.

“Alongside Gizzi’s return, we’re proud to be the home of Island, the latest restaurant from chefs Brad Carter and Tom Brown as well as an upcoming, first of its kind, pop-up shop and music hub from Sony RCA Records.”
