On 30 Upper Grosvenor Street in the space that was until recently home to modern Turkish restaurant Rüya, MA/NA will be overseen by Los Mochis executive chef Leo Tanyag.
According to the group, MA/NA will “celebrate the craft of Japanese cuisine” through the “quiet mastery of precise cuts, the patience of fermentation, and the connection between earth and ocean”.
The 156-cover restaurant and bar will offer dishes including tiger shrimp tempura with creamy wasabi; teriyaki edamame with black truffles; king crab, Asian leaves, yuzu masago, pink peppercorns, espelette chilli, truffle ponzu and caviar pearls; and robata-seared avocado with asparagus, mushrooms and spicy mayo baked in a flaming shell.
More substantial options will include grilled bone-in ribeye with ginger, garlic and sesame soy; and M5 wagyu seared on a Himalayan salt stone with garlic-soy, ponzu and mixed Asian leaves with truffle and garlic fried rice.
As dinner draws to a close, MA/NA will “evolve” into a contemporary cocktail bar in which “resident DJs guide guests through the night”.
The bar, led by Thesleff Group bar director Pietro Collina of The World’s 50 Best Bars-listed Viajante87 and formerly of Nomad and Eleven Madison Park, will pay homage to Japanese bartending.
Designed by OV&CO, the space will feature a dramatic dragon-shaped banquette that coils through the lounge and a custom handblown Magma lighting sculpture by EWE Studio.
There will also be an open wine room and sommelier station for four seated guests and a PDR for up to 20 guests that will offer chef-led experiences.
“Everything we do is intentional and inspired by culture and tradition. I have a love for Asia; my father was born in Japan and my grandfather was Finnish Ambassador to the country, so I have the utmost respect for Japanese culture and ritual,” says Thesleff Group founder Marcus Thesleff.
“You can see this philosophy running through every detail at MA/NA, from the food to the furnishings. It’s a destination where incredible food, creative cocktails, and best-in-class entertainment meet under one roof, whether you’re here for a post-work drink, a unique dining experience, or late-night cocktails. MA/NA isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a celebration of ritual and the quiet mastery behind it.”
Thesleff launched Los Mochis in 2021 following considerable success in Dubai with brands including OKKU and Pangaea.
Last year, the group opened a much larger Los Mochis in the City and acquired and updated venerable Knightsbridge restaurant Sale e Pepe.
In November, the group will open a second London Sale e Pepe at The Langham hotel.
Thesleff Group is also behind LUNA Omakase and Juno Omakase, which are located at Los Mochis London City and Los Mochis Notting Hill respectively, and Notting Hill cocktail bar Viajante87.
In 2027, Thesleff Group will make its international debut with a Los Mochis in upcoming 17.5-acre Los Angeles development One Beverly Hills.
