Wine bar group Vagabond will open what it is billing as the UK’s largest urban winery early next month.

In East London’s Canada Water, the 6,000 sq ft space will combine the group’s self-pour wine bar model with a 100-tonne winery led by head winemaker José Quintana.

Guests will be able to see, smell and taste wine at every stage of its journey while discovering more than 100 wines by the glass from Vagabond’s signature tap-and-pour machines.

The opening will bring the group up to a total of 11 sites, joining nine in London and a further site in Birmingham.

The opening also marks the launch of Vagabond’s new online wine store, which is now live nationwide.

Producing wines from grapes grown within two hours of the capital, across Oxfordshire, Kent, Suffolk, Sussex and beyond, the winery will feature experimental techniques such as solera ageing and concrete-egg fermenters.

“This is where London meets the vineyard. We’ve brought winemaking back to the water and built a space that connects people to the stories, craft and community behind every bottle,” says managing director Christobell Giles.

Alice Keown, leasing director for restaurants and leisure at British Land, added: “Vagabond’s urban winery is a flagship part of our vision for Canada Water as a vibrant cultural and experiential destination. It brings production, hospitality and innovation together under one roof, celebrating London’s heritage while shaping its future.”

The Canada Water project represents Fortress Investment Group’s largest investment yet in the Vagabond brand, which is now part of wine retailer Majestic.

The site will form the foundation of Vagabond’s future growth, acting as both a production hub and a flagship for the next phase of expansion across the UK.

Vagabond’s Canada Water opening follows new bars at St Paul’s and Broadgate.
