Sông Quê Café has acquired the Commercial Street that was once home to Tom Brown's Pearly Queen

East London Vietnamese restaurant Sông Quê Café will open a second restaurant later this month having acquired the former Pearly Queen site near Spitalfields.

Details are limited, but given the name it looks like Pho Bar will focus on pho, a dish that the original Kingsland Road restaurant is well-known for.

The news follows the quiet closure of Tom Brown’s Pearly Queen restaurant earlier this year after less than two year’s trading.

Launched in 2002, Sông Quê Café was among the first Vietnamese restaurant to trade on the section of Kingsland Road near Hoxton Station, which is now referred to as the Pho Mile.

The restaurant is understood to be still owned by the same family and serves a wide-ranging Vietnamese menu.

2025 has seen a number of high-profile Vietnamese restaurant launches including Peckham’s La Rai, Covent Garden’s Cô Thành and a fourth site for Hieu Bui’s fast casual brand Kêu in Borough Market.
