SIX Rooftop closes amid ‘difficult trading conditions’

Publicans and operators across the UK have expressed frustration at Government suggestions that extending pub opening hours could help “save” the sector and boost economic growth.

The top-floor fine dining restaurant at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art has closed its doors citing sustained losses and a tough economic climate.

Announcing the news via social media, the Michelin Guide-listed restaurant disclosed that despite strong community support and dedication of staff, ‘the cumulative effect’ of increasing costs has now become ‘unsustainable’.

“The restaurant has faced difficult trading conditions, a tough economic climate and losses over a sustained period,” the statement reads.

“Like many in the hospitality sector, we’ve absorbed increasing costs for as long as we could, rather than pass the full impact onto our guests.”

The post went on to confirm that all possible options to continue trading had been explored before the decision was made.

Customers with existing bookings have been reassured that all deposits will be refunded as well as gift cards, for which customers have been asked to get in touch with the provided email.

Those with upcoming reservations including private events, will be contacted to source alternative arrangements or cancellations.

SIX Rooftop also used the announcement to thank its customers for their ‘continued support’ and ‘loyalty’ as well as the restaurants staff members.

“We especially want to thank our dedicated staff, past and present, whose talent, hard work and passion shaped SIX Rooftop and everything it stood for.”

Originally opened in 2009 by Fresh Element Ltd, SIX Rooftop was later acquired in 2023 by Pneuma Hospitality Group.

The fine dining restaurant then underwent a complete refurbishment and re-opened in March 2024.

SIX Rooftop is listed in the Michelin guide for 2024 and 2025 and has also been awarded 2 AA rosettes.
