Scottish-based family-run fish and chip shop business Blue Lagoon is crossing the border for its first restaurant in England.

The company will open its 17th restaurant in Newcastle in what it hopes will be the start of wider expansion across the border.

Launching in May or June, the 60-cover restaurant will be located on Grainger Street in the heart of the city and will follow a £1.5m investment.

Blue Lagoon was established in 1975 and operates eight restaurants in Glasgow, as well as sites in Prestwick, Ayr, Perth, Stirling, Balloch, Largs and East Kilbride.

Earlier this month the business was forced to close its Gordon Street restaurant following a fire that broke out at a building next to Glasgow Central Station, but it says it is determined to reopen the site as soon as possible.
