The restaurant, inspired by New York City and its five boroughs, was opened by founders Matthew Sanger, Matthew Willsher, and Mika Rai on the city’s Jewry Street in October 2024.
It was part of the growing movement of by-the-slice New York-style pizza places opening up across the country as diners looked beyond the Italian Margherita style.
Announcing the closure on social media, the owners said the restaurant closed yesterday (27 July) having battled with rising costs.
“We set out to bring proper New York-inspired pizza to Winchester and beyond, and we are incredibly proud of what we created. Unfortunately, the rising costs of running a small independent business mean that we have made the difficult decision to close our doors,” it says.
“We want to say a huge thank you to every member of staff who has worked with us along the way. Your hard work, passion and personality helped make 5 Boroughs what it was, and we are incredibly grateful to every one of you.
“We have also been incredibly lucky to be part of such a tremendous community here in Winchester. The support we have received from our customers, fellow independent businesses and the wider city has meant more to us than we can say.
To everyone who visited us, supported us, shared our posts and, most importantly, loved our pizza - thank you.”
