Award-winning bar Tayēr + Elementary will not reopen this year after a fire forced it to close, its owners have announced.

In an update on their progress since the fire in May, owners Alex Kratena and Monica Berg have revealed that the Old Street bar would remained closed for the rest of 2026.

“We won’t pretend this isn’t incredibly frustrating. Being unable to open our doors for reasons completely outside of our control has been difficult, and we miss the bar, our routine, our regulars and the everyday rhythm of sharing our space with all of you more than we can say,” the pair say.

It had been hoped that Tayēr + Elementary, which is currently ranked at number 12 on Europe’s 50 Best Bar, would be able to open before the year end. In the interim, Kratena and Berg operated Casual by Tayēr, a six-week summer pop-up in the basement of Mercer Street bar Cato.

The pair say they feel incredibly grateful for ‘the amount of love, patience and support’ they have received over the past few months and still don’t know when they will be able to reopen.

“We can’t wait for the day we finally get to welcome you back. We don’t know exactly when that will be yet, but as soon as we do, you’ll be the first to know.

“Until then — thank you for sticking with us. We miss you, and we’ll see you in the bar.”
