The top 5 stories in hospitality this week 15/02 - 19/02

What were some of the top stories in hospitality this week? Here's our pick.

  • Dishoom has topped a list of the UK's 100 favourite restaurantts, with Hawksmoor, Tayyabs, Yauatcha and Franco Manca rounding out the top five. Over three-quarters of the list were 'affordable' restaurants, with dishes costing up to £25.
  • It's getting easier eating green with restaurants adding more vegetarian dishes to their menus in response to a growing number of diners eating less meat. Almost three in ten people have reduced the amount of meat they eat in the past year, while one in ten are considering ditching it altogether.
  • The Queen herself was on hand to present the 2016 Gold Service Scholarship Award to Jennifer Santner, restaurant manager at Fenchurch restaurant at London's Sky Garden. Her Majesty - who is patron of the award - praised the competition for 'raising the profile of hospitality in the UK'.
  • Leon, Abokado and other restaurants signed up to Jamie Oliver's voluntary sugar tax have raised £50,000 to build free public water fountains in some of the most deprived areas of the UK. However, there was less sweet news for those calling for a nationwide tax with David Cameron reportedly vetoing the plans this week.
