Directed by Matt Johnson, best known for the 2023 film BlackBerry, the film is set during the summer of 1975, when a 19-year-old Bourdain discovers the chaotic world of professional kitchens while working in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
The story is adapted from the opening chapters of Bourdain’s landmark memoir Kitchen Confidential.
Bourdain is played by Dominic Sessa, who starred in the critically acclaimed 2023 film The Holdovers.
The cast also includes Emilia Jones, Dagmara Domińczyk, Rich Sommer, Stavros Halkias, Leo Woodall and Antonio Banderas.
The teaser shows a young, rebellious Bourdain, who describes himself in voiceover as “a prick” who “really needed to get my ass kicked”.
Later, the one-minute snippet shows its protagonist starting to fall in love with food and cooking.
Bourdain went on to study cooking at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA).
After graduating, he worked in and latterly ran a number of top restaurant kitchens in New York.
In 1999, Bourdain published the New Yorker article “Don’t Eat Before Reading This”, which evolved into the bestselling memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.
Part confessional and part exposé of restaurant life, the book is widely regarded as one of the most influential works ever written about the profession and launched Bourdain’s career as a celebrity chef and writer.
Alongside his writing, Bourdain enjoyed a successful television career, beginning with A Cook’s Tour on the Food Network in 2002. His CNN series Parts Unknown, which aired from 2013 to 2018, saw him travel to more than 130 countries exploring local cultures and cuisines.
Bourdain took his own life in 2018 at the age of 61.
Tony is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas on 14 August.
