Robin and Sarah Gill to launch Brixton wine bar Bottle & Rye in July

Robin Gill and his wife Sarah are opening a Parisian-inspired wine bar in Brixton next month.

Bottle & Rye will open on Market Row in mid July and will be a 28-cover bar that will serve a continually changing list of natural wines.

Robin and head chef Ben Hughes-Gage, formerly of London's Lino, have designed a menu that pays homage to the all-day bistros of Paris with dishes that play on French classics.

Highlights will include Ogleshield gougères with pickled walnut; vichyssoise oyster tartare; and smoked eel brandade with pink fir crisps and Provençal herbs.

Brunch will be served from 10am to 2.30pm with dishes to include poached Cacklebean eggs with boudin noir and hollandaise; and croque madames.

Like the food, the interior is inspired by European cafés, with a marble, brass and walnut bar a central feature of the restaurant.

Lewis Wright, who has worked with the Gills since 2013, will be heading up the front of house.

“Bottle & Rye is inspired by the Parisian café culture that Sarah and I are so fond of,” says Gill.

“These bistros are filled from morning through to night and we love how these little gems are embraced by the city. I’m very excited to be opening my first restaurant in Brixton, an area where I’ve lived for most of my London life.”

The new venue will follow Gill’s latest launch Maria G’s, which will also open early next month in Kensington. It joins the Gills’ other ventures, Bermondsey Larder, Sorella, Darby’s and bakery Rye by the Water in Brentford.

He is also chef director at Birch Community, the hotel and estate in Hertfordshire that is home to The Zebra Riding Club restaurant.

The news of Bottle & Rye follows the recent closure of Brixton wine bar Salon.
