Chef and restaurateur Tommy Banks has launched a new ‘pub-focused’ hospitality group in partnership with his existing business partner Matthew Lockwood, his brother James Banks and businessman Neil Armstrong.

Set to open its doors later this summer, Jeopardy Hospitality’s first project will be the General Tarleton, an 18th century coaching inn in Knaresborough about 10 minutes from Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

The venue is currently undergoing a ‘sensitive’ restoration by the team and will reopen as an eight-bedroom pub with a private dining area, large bar and beer garden.

With the General Tarleton and future pub projects, Jeopardy Hospitality says it ‘aims to breathe new life into cherished venues and bring a renewed sense of purpose and connection to communities across the UK’.

“Jeopardy Hospitality is an exciting new step for us, bringing new life to places with real history, like the General Tarleton. We’re not just reopening pubs, but working to restore them with care and respect for what makes them unique,” Banks says.

“It’s about creating spaces where people can come together, enjoy good food, and connect with local heritage. While times are challenging, we believe that growth is important for staying resilient in the UK hospitality scene. With rising costs and changing regulations, expanding helps us make the most of our resources. Together with Matt, James, and Neil, we’re focused on creating something that’s grounded in community.”

Jeopardy Hospitality will be run separately from the Tommy Banks Group, which comprises the Michelin-starred Black Swan Oldstead and Roots York as well as the Abbey Inn and food box and catering company Made in Oldstead.

Banks is recognised as having been the youngest Michelin-starred chef in Britain when the Black Swan retained its star under his leadership in September 2013.
