Canadian brand The Tavern Collective has made its UK debut with a restaurant and bar in the Victoria Quays area of Sheffield city centre.

Officially launched yesterday (22 September), Tavern on the Quays is located in the Grade II-listed arches beneath the Quays Hotel, a space that had previously stood unused.

The 5,000 sq ft restaurant seats 90 guests, plus additional bar seating.

Further elements, taking the venue to 9,000 sq ft in total, will open at a later date.

These include two under-arch private dining spaces for up to 40 people each and a ballroom with capacity for a further 200 guests, aimed at conferences, weddings and parties.

A patio will also be created in the coming months. Forty members of staff have already been recruited.

The menu features a mix of globally inspired dishes and traditional British pub fare, with an emphasis on sharing plates.

Signature items include The Tavern Collective’s Detroit-style deep dish pizza and Canadian poutine – fries and cheese curds topped with gravy.

Cocktails, developed in collaboration with drinks giant Diageo, take inspiration from Sheffield’s rich musical heritage.

Tavern on the Quays offers a contemporary spin on the classic pub, blending the modern style of the brand’s North American venues with a more traditional British setting.

The design takes its cue from ‘laidback steampunk vibes’.

As the bulldog logo suggests, dogs are permitted. A special dog menu and treats from local boutique dog bakery Ruby and Sophia’s are also available.

“We want Tavern on the Quays to become the place to be and a real neighbourhood hangout,” said Rene Ortiz, group director for UK & Ireland at The Tavern Collective’s owner Northland Restaurant Group.

“It’s a beautiful building, full of history and lovely architectural details, but renovated in a modern way. From the relaxed steampunk vibes and our playful bulldog mascot, to surprising menu twists and throwback tunes, we can’t wait to show the people of Sheffield what The Tavern Collective is all about.”

The Tavern Collective operates two sites in Canada, in Calgary and Winnipeg.

According to its website, The Tavern Collective is also preparing to make its US debut with a site in Las Colinas, Texas.
