Social media star and former City Social chef Nathaniel Mortley AKA NattyCanCook will open his debut London restaurant early next month.

In Herne Hill, 2210 by NattyCanCook follows the success of the South London-born chef’s seven-month-long residency at Peckham pub The Greyhound.

On Norwood Road, the 80-cover restaurant will offer the playful yet refined versions of Caribbean classics Mortley has become known for.

Dishes will include roti with scotch bonnet butter; ackee and saltfish spring roll; jerk chicken supreme; and confit turkey wing with scotch bonnet glaze and beetroot ketchup.

Desserts will include deep-fried apple crumble and a take on plantain cake served with white chocolate ganache, chocolate snow and pickled plantain.

On Sundays, 2210 by NattyCanCook will serve Caribbean-style roasts.

The restaurant’s drinks menu will also take inspiration from the Caribbean, with a strong list of rums, and riffs on Caribbean classics, such as rum punch and daiquiris.

Mortley started out in hospitality early, cooking at top London restaurants including The Arts Club, Oblix at The Shard and Jason Atherton’s City Social, but became disillusioned with the industry and eventually found himself in HMP Brixton.

However, through The Clink Project (a charity that aims to reduce reoffending by providing vocational training in hospitality) his passion for cooking was reignited.

Following his release, Mortley continued cooking and began sharing his creations on social media, building a large following online for his inventive reimagining of Caribbean staples.

A full interview with Mortley will be published next month.
