Located just off Edinburgh’s Princes Street, the restaurant will occupy a former hairdresser’s and serve the street food dishes the fast-expanding group has become known for, including roti canai, char kway teow (rice noodles stir-fried with prawns and egg), and Malaysian fried chicken.
The design retains the building’s original façade, internal features, and exposed brickwork, creating a space that “honours the building’s history”.
“Roti King has always been about more than food – it’s about the emotional connection between people, culture and community,” says CEO Ganan Kanagathurai. “We’re excited to be part of Edinburgh’s incredible independent food scene and to share the passion and creativity of Malaysia with a city that appreciates honest, authentic, flavourful food.”
Founder and chef Sugen Gopal moved to the UK in 2004, beginning his culinary journey with a small kiosk in Oriental City, Colindale.
He opened his first restaurant in Euston in 2014 and now operates Roti King sites in Waterloo, Battersea, Spitalfields and, most recently, Brighton.
Gopal is also behind spin-off brand Gopal’s Corner, which has concessions in Market Halls Canary Wharf, Oxford Circus, Victoria, Westfield and Paddington.
