The team behind Manchester’s Freight Island are opening a 1,000-capacity open-air food, drink and music destination in Brixton

Launching on the 7 May, Freight Brixton will combine chef residencies, cocktail bars and a programme of music, sport screenings and community events throughout the spring and summer.

Located close to Brixton Station and next to Brixton Village Market, the venue is positioned as London’s largest rooftop destination.

Food will be led by a rotating line-up of chef residencies and festival-style takeovers, including Taco Fest and Bite Twice presents Dine Hard, alongside brunch concepts such as Reggae Brunch and Maggi Brunch.

The drinks programme will feature speciality bars, including the Casamigos House of Friends (pictured) and Hotel Milano, an Italian-inspired aperitivo concept forming part of the new Brixton Cocktail Club.

Freight Brixton is expected to create approximately 50 jobs, built around what is described as a ‘drink, dance and dine’ experience.

The opening music line-up features David Rodigan, Laurence Guy, Ghosts of Garage and Dimitri From Paris. The venue will also host weekly Soul of the South Thursdays in collaboration with Cross The Tracks, focusing on jazz, funk and soul.

In addition, the space will screen major sporting events, including a dedicated World Cup Fanzone, as well as FA Cup and Champions League matches.

Plan for expansion

Freight Island, which opened its flagship venue in July 2020 in Manchester, formed part of the wider regeneration of Depot Mayfield.

Located two minutes from Manchester Piccadilly station, the site combines street food operators, bars and live entertainment.

Following its establishment in Manchester, Freight Island has outlined ambitions to expand into other cities, citing the north of England and the Midlands as key areas.

As part of that expansion, the business announced it will launch a site in Leeds after agreeing to a deal with Landsec-owned Trinity Leeds. Expected to open in spring next year, the new site will form part of a £15m expansion and redevelopment of Trinity Kitchen, which originally opened in 2013.

Freight Island also announced plans in 2025 for a site in Newcastle, with the Manchester-born brand stating it would open at Eldon Square in the autumn, describing the project as the largest single-site food, beverage and entertainment venue in a UK city centre. As of 2026, the site has yet to materialise.
