Overlooking Torbay, the restaurant had been trading in its current guise for less than two years.
The site was refurbished and relaunched by entrepreneur Lewis Poulier in 2024, repositioning the venue as an upmarket dining destination with panoramic coastal views.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the restaurant said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce The Bay has officially closed its doors. The UK’s current hospitality sector has put pressure on all businesses from suppliers to consumers; the numbers simply no longer add up for an independent business like ours to sustainably operate.”
The Bay offered an upmarket, wide-ranging menu that showcased modern British cooking with global influences.
Dishes included coriander hummus with roasted cauliflower and hazelnut dukkah; steamed plaice with shellfish chowder and herb dumplings; and poached cod with potato fondants, pancetta, broad beans and tarragon broth.
The venue featured ground-floor seating for more than 50 guests, alfresco dining for a further 50-plus covers during peak season, and a first-floor private function room designed to cater for events and celebrations.
Its closure adds to the growing list of independent operators citing an unworkable financial model as a key factor in their decision to cease trading.
