Chef Chee Hwee Tong’s Tong Dinner Ltd called in administrators earlier this month.
Located near Trafalgar Square, Gouqi is the debut solo restaurant from the former Hakkasan executive chef.
Launched in 2023, Gouqi positions itself as offering a fusion of flavours, techniques and ingredients drawn from across China.
Signature dishes include a ‘legendary’ Peking duck served with Oscietra caviar, slow-cooked A4 wagyu and whole South African Kippin abalone, alongside more accessible options such as a steamed royal dim sum platter.
The extensive à la carte menu spans appetisers, soups, barbecue dishes, as well as a wide selection of meat and seafood.
The interiors follow a classic high-end Chinese aesthetic, combining dark wood furniture with glass panelling, a marble-topped bar and black leather stools. Lighter touches, including a pale marble floor and blue leather chairs, add contrast to the space.
The name Gouqi is derived from the goji berry, a symbol of health and vitality that underpins the restaurant’s ethos.
Tong moved to London from Singapore in 2001 to open the original Hakkasan in Hanway Place, helping it secure its first Michelin star.
Under his leadership, Hakkasan Mayfair, Yauatcha Soho and the now-closed HKK also went on to win Michelin stars.
The team at Gouqi has been contacted for comment.
