In July the pizzeria, which was launched by Matthew Sanger, Matthew Willsher, and Mika Rai on the city’s Jewry Street in October 2024, said it was closing having battled with rising costs, but its owners say that it will now reopen and recommence trading having found a way to ‘give it another shot’.
Revealing the news in an Instagram post entitled ‘We’re back’, one of the founders revealed that the restaurant will reopen on 28 August.
“A few weeks ago, I genuinely thought we’d served our last slice. But I wasn’t ready to let it go just yet,” the post reads.“With a lot of help from friends, family and some pretty incredible people around me, we’ve found a way to keep the doors open and give Five Boroughs another shot.
“When I started this place, I wanted it to feel like the neighbourhood pizza joints I love. Somewhere with a bit of soul. Somewhere you can grab a slice at the counter, sit down with a cold beer, hear some good music and stay a little longer than you planned.”
The original team is also returning for the reopening. “I’m incredibly grateful for their patience, support and understanding over the past few weeks. It feels pretty special to be coming back together with some of the same familiar faces who have been such a big part of Five Boroughs,” the post continues.
“I’ve learned a hell of a lot getting here and there are things I’m going to do differently this time. But the heart of the place isn’t changing.
“Five Boroughs is back. And we can’t wait to open the doors again.”
