Taking its name from the Portuguese term Nipo-Brasileiro, meaning Japanese-Brazilian, NIPO will draw on the longstanding cultural connection between the two countries.
The menu will combine Japanese techniques with Brazilian live-fire cooking.
It will feature sushi prepared at a live counter, Japanese-inspired dishes, robata cooking and Brazilian specialities including flame-cooked picanha, alongside larger plates designed for sharing.
The drinks list will continue the theme with cocktails incorporating Japanese techniques and ingredients alongside Brazilian ‘infusions’.
“NIPO is something genuinely different for Newcastle, and I’m incredibly excited to be joining the team at such an important stage in its journey,” says general manager Goran Natev. “Our focus now is on bringing the team together, investing in training and making sure every element of the experience is where we want it to be.”
NIPO co-founder Rodrigo Grassi Duarte adds: “We already have a wealth of experience within the NIPO team and a strong understanding of what it takes to create exceptional hospitality. Goran brings another level of expertise from London’s restaurant scene, and his experience will elevate what we have already built as we bring NIPO to life.”
RIO Brazilian Steakhouse was founded in Jesmond, Newcastle, in 2019 and specialises in Brazilian rodizio-style dining, with meats carved at the table alongside an unlimited salad bar.
The brand currently operates seven restaurants across northern England and Scotland, with an eighth location in Glasgow listed as coming soon.
