Liverpool restaurant The Tavern Co has opened a second site in the city centre, with its new Tavern Co Social concept now trading on Water Street.

The 120-cover venue occupies the ground floor of New Zealand House, the former home of Hooters and Newz Bar.

The new site brings the Smithdown Road operator’s breakfast and brunch offer into the city centre, alongside an evening menu focused on tapas, craft beer and more substantial dishes.

The venue features a large central bar, more than 10 TVs and booth and bar seating, with the space designed to show live sports.

The original The Tavern Co on Smithdown Road was established in 1986 by Keith Gurney, who relocated to Liverpool from the United States.

The restaurant has operated at its Liverpool location for more than 30 years, serving a Mexican-American-inspired menu alongside breakfast and brunch dishes, including full English and American-style breakfasts.

“For over three decades, The Tavern Co has been a staple of Liverpool’s food scene on Smithdown Road, famous for bringing people together,” says Mellissa Dunleavy, general manager for Tavern Co Social.

“Expanding into Liverpool city centre is a massive milestone for us.

“This new site will create over 20 full- and part-time jobs for the industry while bringing an iconic building back to life.

“We look forward to welcoming familiar faces from our heritage site, as well as new diners trying out Tavern 2.0 for the first time.”

The new site follows a change in ownership of the restaurant in 2023.
