Italian restaurateur Roberto Costa has relaunched his original Macellaio RC restaurant in South Kensington as a new osteria-inspired concept.

Casa Macellaio draws inspiration from his family’s restaurant near Genoa and is billed as a more relaxed, “Mediterranean-spirited” kitchen.

Executive chef Edoardo Ferrera’s menu will focus on simple Italian cooking, with an emphasis on affordability.

Starters will include carpaccio with Cetara anchovies; beef and bone marrow steak tartare; and cod brandacujun. Pasta dishes will include tagliatelle with white ragu, cream and truffle; and seafood spaghetti al cartoccio with squid, mussels, clams and tiger prawns.

Mains will include kidney with butter, sage and white wine; Lake District beef tagliata alla bismarck with asparagus and egg; and charcoal-grilled cod with lemon, garlic and rosemary. Desserts will include tiramisu and bianco al basilico, a basil-infused panna cotta.

As with all of Costa’s restaurant concepts to date, the wine list will be exclusively Italian.

Cocktails will include a Venetian negroni made with Select in place of Campari, alongside a negroni sbagliato and a boulevardier.

The restaurant’s two-floor space will feature wood accents, ivory tones and a charcuterie counter.

“We are delighted to begin this new chapter with Casa Macellaio. Hospitality has always been at the heart of our family, built on warmth, generosity and togetherness, and we cannot wait to welcome both new and returning guests into that same spirit,” says Costa.

Costa opened the South Kensington restaurant in October 2012, marking his UK debut after running a number of restaurants in Italy.

He also recently launched God Save The Pizza in Exmouth Market, which aims to challenge the dominance of ‘London-style’ pizza.

The concept offers a menu split into three tiers — Original, Revolution and Rebel — with thin, crispy Roman-style sourdough bases.

Casa Macellaio launches today (12 October).
