Considerate Hotelier Awards Announced

The Considerate Hotelier of the Year Awards have been announced celebrating work by hotels to lessen their impact on the environment

THE CONSIDERATE Hotelier of the Year Awards have been announced, naming The Cavendish London as overall winner.

The awards, run by the Considerate Hoteliers Association, recognise establishments for innovative initiatives to reduce their carbon footprints.

Other winners include the Radisson SAS in Edinburgh for best waste management, Deans Place Hotel in East Sussex for water management and Best Western Premier Yew Lodge Hotel in Derbyshire was awarded best energy management.

In the category for promoting sustainable food, the rural winner was Lasswade Country House Hotel in Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, and the Apex International Hotel in Edinburgh for Metropolitan.

Some of the reductions the hotels achieved include a saving of £6500 on water bills, a decrease in waste sent to landfill of over 40%, and an overall decrease in energy consumption of 17%.

Liam Lambert, Chairman of Considerate Hoteliers Association and European Director of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, said: “There is definitely a feeling that the hospitality industry is taking action to reduce its environmental impact, and is enjoying the benefits of doing so.

"It is gratifying to see how hotels outside of London are now making their presence felt with category winners in Scotland, Wales and rural England.

“Each year it gets harder to find a clear winner but we hope that our support, and that of our sponsors, will give the industry a greater incentive and an easier path to creating a greener and socially responsible business model.”
