Five Guys launches first UK drive-thru restaurant

Five Guys has chosen Middlesbrough’s Teesside retail park for its first drive-thru restaurant.

Launched yesterday (2 August), the site is easily accessible from the A66 and A19 and includes a full-size Five Guys restaurant that seats around 100 covers.

This latest launch from the fast-expanding better burger business comes as a number of other major brands look to expand their drive-thru operations.

The push is driven by a new wave of US-founded brands including Tim Hortons and Taco Bell seeking to replicate what they do on the other side of the pond but home grown brands are also getting in on the act including Leon, which recently announced plans for a drive-thru site in west Yorkshire.

Other brands to experiment with drive-thru sites include MEATliquor and British Afghan BBQ restaurant Cue Point.

The increasing interest in the space is down to shifts in consumer behaviour caused by the pandemic and the prediction that electric cars will see more customers seek quality food and drink experiences at services and other car-accessible destinations.

“We’re thrilled to have launched our first drive-thru store in the UK and are delighted with the positive feedback from our customers and fans since opening,” says a Five Guys spokesperson.
