Loungers is looking to Germany as the location for its first overseas location.

The all-day restaurant and bar group says it will be the exploring the prospect in the second half of the year as it looks to expand into new territories.

Speaking at MCA’s Pub Conference last week, Loungers CEO Nick Collins said that he was ‘curious’ about the opportunities of the German market and preparing to look for a first site.

“We have spent a fair bit of time in Germany trying to understand the culture, the F&B market and the German consumer. It’s been fascinating. There’s clearly a lot of similarities between the Germans and us from a consumer perspective. It’s a great country with lovely people and we’re curious about the opportunity.”

Any site would take the philosophy from the existing Lounge operation and apply it in a way that’s relevant to a German consumer, rather than opening a British-styled operation overseas, he added.

“It’s not a case of exporting something British, but thinking about the principles of what we do over here and how we apply that to the German market.”

As well as overseas, Collins said that Loungers was also considering expansion into travel hub locations, including airports.

“It’s something we’ve considered and continue to consider. One of our strongest suits is delivering good food and drinks consistently at speed and that’s something that would work well in an airport environment.

“There’s no specific opportunity we’re fitting out at the moment, but we’re curious.”

Loungers currently operates an estate of 313 sites across the UK under its Lounge, Cosy Club and Brightside brands.
