Andrew Wong will relocate his two Michelin-starred Pimlico flagship next month for a six-week summer residency at Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London.

The move has been planned to allow for a full renovation of A Wong, which launched in 2012.

Opening on Tuesday 18 August, the residency will run for dinner only and will bring Wong’s Collections of China menus – regular and vegetarian – to Mayfair.

Located within the hotel’s private dining spaces adjacent to the Atrium restaurant, Wong and his full team will oversee the temporary operation.

The residency will run until final service on 26 September, with A Wong expected to reopen shortly after.

Until then, the original Pimlico site will continue trading for lunch and dinner until its final service on 1 August.

It has long been rumoured that A Wong would eventually have to move on from its Pimlico site due to a planned redevelopment of the building, but the forthcoming refurbishment suggests that either those plans are no longer proceeding or have been delayed indefinitely.

A Wong is London’s most influential Chinese fine-dining restaurants.

Founded in 2012, it evolved from his family’s Anglo-Cantonese restaurant business and was relaunched following his training and travels across China.

Named after his parents, Albert and Annie, the restaurant was created to challenge perceptions of Chinese cuisine in the UK, moving beyond Cantonese takeaway staples to showcase regional Chinese cooking in a fine-dining context.

Wong’s cooking combines classical Chinese techniques with extensive research into regional cuisines, alongside British seasonal produce and contemporary presentation.

The result is a highly technical, modern interpretation of Chinese culinary traditions presented through tasting menus, dim sum lunches and seasonal collections.

The restaurant, located between Victoria and Pimlico, is a regular on Restaurant’s list of the top 100 restaurants in the UK and is widely credited with elevating Chinese fine dining in the UK.

The surrounding area has long been associated with Chinese restaurants in London, with nearby pioneers such as Hunan and Ken Lo’s Memories of China helping shape the neighbourhood’s culinary identity since the 1980s.

Last month, Wong also revealed plans to partner with Dishoom co-founder Amar Radia to launch a Chinese pub concept in Shoreditch later this year. Kong will be the anchor tenant at British Land’s Norton Folgate development, alongside Osteria Angelina and Kolamba East.
