Big Mamma eyes Covent Garden for third London restaurant
The company has submitted plans to Westminster City Council to merge the buildings of 29-30 Maiden Lane and 15 Henrietta Street in Covent Garden to create a ‘high quality destination’ restaurant.
In the planning application, first reported by Eater London, the merge of the buildings would create a 227-cover restaurant split over two floors with an ancillary bar at ground and basement level.
In the documents submitted to Westminster City Council, the group says the restaurant would continue its approach of offering a vibrant modern take on a traditional Italian trattoria experience and will serve breakfast, a lunch menu of pizza and pasta and a large choice of homemade dishes and sharing plates for dinner.
Its proposed opening hours are 8am to midnight Monday to Wednesday, and to 1am Thursday to Saturday, with the restaurant opening from 8am to 11pm on Sunday.
French company Big Mamma, which is run by Tigrane Seydoux and Victor Lugger, launched in the capital earlier this year with the opening of 172-cover Gloria and Shoreditch.
This was followed up with the opening of 300-cover Circolo Popolare in Fitzrovia’s Rathbone Place. Both restaurants have so far proved popular with Londoners, with queues outside at peak times.
There had been speculation from the outset that the group had intentions to open three venues in quick succession on coming to the capital. In July, BigHospitality reported that it was looking to open a third London restaurant to its portfolio in the early part of next year and that it was also exploring the idea of opening a food market in the capital.
The group also operates six trattorias in France as well as a large food market.
