Edinburgh vegan and vegetarian restaurant Hendersons will open a sister site in Glasgow this summer.

Announced via Instagram, Hendersons Glasgow will be located at 721 Pollokshaws Road, near to Queens Park.

The post revealed that Glasgow’s Southside area - which is a hotspot for independent restaurants - had been in the company’s sights for many years.

It also described the process as not having been easy: “Opening a small independent business in the current economy is definitely a bit of a nail biter, but we’re also confident that our delicious vegan and vegetarian dishes will be a great addition to the already fantastic Southside culinary community.’

Founded in 1962 by Janet Henderson on Hanover Street, Hendersons was one of the first restaurants in the UK to encourage people to embrace a meat-free lifestyle and was also a pioneer of farm-to-table, with much of its produce grown on a farm in East Lothian.

The restaurant later closed in 2020, citing a poor winter trading period combined with the challenges of the pandemic, but the founder’s grandson Barrie Henderson reopened the restaurant a year later.

Before its closure, the restaurant was billed as the UK’s longest-running vegetarian restaurant.

On Hanover Street, the Edinburgh Hendersons offers dishes including oyster mushroom scallops; aubergine tartare; and sweet potato wedges with lime and garlic cashew cream; Henderson haggis with root mash, whisky tarragon cream and caramelised red onion; and gnocchi and white beans with slow-roasted sun-dried tomato, rainbow chard, wild garlic pesto and toasted pine nuts.

Completing the offer is a number of desserts, including a homemade ‘deluxe’ affogato; a pistachio tartlet; and a panna cotta.

The post concludes saying: “For we still have a lot of cleaning and decorating to do, but watch this space! We can’t wait to open”.
