The future of Soho institution Balans is in doubt following an email saying the group is ‘no longer trading’.

In an email, the group, which made its debut in Soho in 1987, said all creditors will be contacted in due course.

Balans operates two sites, one in Soho called Balans No. 60 and another in Kensington. Both sites are currently listed as being temporarily closed on Google.

At its peak, the group had eight restaurants across London including a site at 34 Old Compton Street as well as venues in Shepherds Bush and Stratford.

In May 2020, Balans put its then seven-strong estate up for auction as a result of trading difficulties during the Covid 19 pandemic. However, following a cash injection and successful lease renegotiations with landlords across the most of its estate, the group reopened five of its sites that summer following the lifting of lockdown restrictions.

The Shepherds Bush site subsequently shut later that year amid further restrictions and its Stratford and Soho site Balans No. 34 have both closed, the latter having now been taken over by Frites Atelier.

Balans was founded in Soho by David Taylor originally as a sandwich shop where sandwiches were made to order and counted Rowan Atkinson and Ronnie Scott as its customers. It celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017.
