The fine dining restaurant, which Drake launched in 2017, has ceased trading today (July 28), according to SurreyLive.
Describing the closure as ‘like a bereavement’, Drake blamed the sudden closure on rising costs and the challenging trading environment.
“It’s been a very difficult decision to make, but I have no choice. It feels like a bereavement,” he said.
“The financials of running an independent restaurant simply don’t work and we have lost a lot of money trying to keep it afloat.
“I am devastated for Alex and the team, who have been doing and fantastic job with the new menu and now need to find new job, which will be difficult in this climate. Everyone loses and I am truly sorry.
“I want to thank all of our amazing customers and team members , it’s never taken for granted and I appreciate how much support we have had over the years.”
Drake placed his Michelin-starred Surrey restaurant, which is located inside a Grade II 18th century building, on the market in May amid plans to move on.
Sorrell is one of a number of well-established restaurants to have closed its doors permanently. This week Hattons of Royal Tunbridge Wells announced it will close its café and restaurant on The Pantiles after a decade in business, and Berber & Q in Haggerston will close this month after 11 years.
Also this month Soho stalwart 10 Greek Street announced its closure after 14 years, seafood restaurant Prawn on the Lawn has closed after 13 years, and Zafferano, one of London’s longest-standing Italian restaurants, also closed its doors after an impressive 30-year run.
