More than 1,000 UK restaurants, bars, cafés, bakeries and pubs owned or co-owned by women have been identified on an interactive map created by chef Sally Abé and Topjaw producer Kayla Lawrie.

The map, which launched in July, was created to increase the visibility of female-owned hospitality businesses and bring venues from across the UK together in one public guide.

Chef Sally Abé, who recently opened Hackney restaurant Teal by Sally Abé, and Kayla Lawrie said the idea came after they found there was no single place where they could see female-owned hospitality businesses across the country.

The map includes restaurants, pubs, bars, cafés and bakeries, with each venue marked by a pin. Listings include information on the business, its ownership and links to its social media channels.

The pair said the map was designed for people looking to support female-owned businesses and “book tables with a little more intention”, while highlighting the women behind those businesses.

“We know this industry is alive with diverse female talent, and we hope our new map sparks conversation about representation and visibility but also supports them during a time where the industry is already facing enough challenges,” says Abé and Lawrie.

“We’re excited to put the map in the hands of the industry and diners but even more excited about the potential it creates to do even more.”
