Simon Rogan has arguably done more than any other British chef in the past two decades to shape what appears on the plates of the country’s top restaurants.

While he may not have the household recognition of figures such as Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay or Heston Blumenthal, Simon Rogan’s influence runs deep and through modern British fine dining. His approach has helped redefine how ambitious restaurants operate: rigorous attention to sourcing, a restrained use of modern techniques and a highly considered, nature-led style of cooking.

Central to his approach is a long-standing commitment to sustainability, with much of L’Enclume’s produce grown on his nearby farm - a farm-to-table ethos he embraced well before it became industry shorthand. At the heart of his influence is his flagship L’Enclume.

Opened in 2002 in the Lake District village of Cartmel, its elevation to three Michelin stars a few years ago marked a defining moment not only for Rogan but for British gastronomy as a whole. Not only was it the first restaurant in the north to receive full marks from Michelin, it was also the first to do so while cooking food that owed more to Britain than anywhere else.

Rogan’s wider empire has expanded significantly in recent years. Through his Umbel Restaurants Group, he has built a portfolio that remains firmly aligned with his principles while demonstrating considerable range. In the Lake District, this includes Rogan & Co, Henrock, and the seasonal restaurant at Our Farm.

Further afield, there are international outposts in Hong Kong, Malta and, most recently, Thailand, alongside Skof in Manchester and AO by Daniel Rogan, which joined the group earlier this year.

He is now behind more Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK than any other chef, with a total of 10 stars across the group. Rogan did not only change how fine dining looks and tastes; he also helped reshape how it feels.

L’Enclume, in particular, doesn’t have the feel of a typical three-star restaurant, instead offering an experience more akin to a buzzy gastropub than a hushed temple of gastronomy. The absence of stiffness - with friendly, down-to-earth service, largely local staff and an informal atmosphere - has influenced a broader shift away from formality at the top end of UK hospitality.

Typically modest, Rogan is unlikely to overstate his own impact. But his career tells a different story: one of consistency, originality and quietly brilliant leadership.
