Sam and Sam Clarke have closed the Hackney site of their tapas and mezze brand Morito after a decade.

The restaurant, located on Hackney Road, had its last service on 14 June, with the pair saying it marked ‘the end of a significant chapter’.

The Clarkes, who also own Moro, blamed the challenging environment for the hospitality sector for the closure. A post on Instagram says: “It’s no secret that the hospitality industry has been facing sustained and significant challenges. Like many others, our Hackney location has been increasingly affected, despite our best efforts.”

Morito Hackney opened in 2016 and was the second location for the brand, which is described ‘the noisier, more rebellious sibling’ to Moro that is ‘always eager to experiment, explore and have a little fun along the way’.

The menu is rooted in the Mediterranean through a London lens and brings together tapas and mezze.

“This has not been an easy decision. What we’ve built goes far beyond a restaurant - it’s been a home for our team, a place of connection for our guests and a space filled with energy, creativity and generosity every day,” the Clarkes add.

“There is so much to celebrate: our incredible staff, our loyal customers, the friendships formed, dishes shared and memories created. We are incredibly proud of what Morito Hackney Road has been, and deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of its story.”

The original Morito in Exmouth Market remains opens, as does Moro.
