Colman’s: a classic condiment that always cuts the mustard

Related tags Mustard

Colman’s has a rich British history and has been a firm staple with the much-loved roast for many a year. But what makes this brand great is the story behind the locally sourced ingredients which deliver its bold, distinctive flavour…

We know chefs are passionate about quality meat and take great pride in making it the heart of a dish. Quality is also key when it comes to the condiments which complement the hero of the dish! From Dexter Beef to Salt Marsh lamb, Colman’s is the perfect accompaniment to your delicious dishes.

Colman’s perfected its signature English mustard way back in 1814 and over the last 200 years it has consistently delivered on bold, fiery flavour.

The nation’s favourite mustard*

So, what makes this condiment so special? The perfect balance of passion and hard work. Founder Jeremiah Colman was something of a perfectionist, grinding the mustard seeds not once, but twice, to turn them into a pungent, double superfine mustard powder. To this day, this is the key ingredient to producing the perfect flavour that has given Colman’s the proud title of number one mustard*. While the company may have grown considerably to meet demand over the last two centuries, its mustard-making process hasn’t changed much and indeed, some of the farmers are fourth generation suppliers to Colman’s…

Michael Sly is the chairman of the English Mustard Growers Co-operative, a group of 18 growers who supply all of their seeds to Colman’s. Sly and his family have been farming Colman’s mustard seeds on the sweeping Cambridgeshire fens for the past 120 years.

“On our farm we grow Sutton variety brown mustard seeds, which add pungency,” he explains. Sly’s seeds play a big part in the making of Colman’s fiery mustard – but although much of his life revolves around mustard, he admits that he never tires of the stuff. “Some people say I’m obsessive – I call it passion,” and it’s this passion that Colman’s relies on to ensure they remain the UK’s number one mustard brand*, delivering bold, British flavour with every product.

Colman’s love of British ingredients is not isolated to its mustard. They have mint, horseradish, tartare and seafood sauce which are all crafted in Britain and made with British ingredients. They believe local sourcing is key in achieving their bold, distinctive flavour and are big supporters of British farming. That’s why they have joined forces with the National Farmers Union and Red Tractor to support the ‘Back British Farming’ campaign, which encourages consumers and operators to support the highest animal welfare standards, sustainable farming and great-tasting British-raised meat.

More than mustard

Colman’s is a champion of great British ingredients, farmers and roast dinners in more ways than one. Chefs and customers alike reach for Colman’s because of its powerful flavour
and ability to add an unmistakable kick to a range of foods.

Although carefully roasted meat and flavoursome condiments are a favourite British pairing, condiments can also be used as an ingredient in marinade, for adding glaze to pastry, to enhance vegan and vegetarian dishes, and much, much more.
