Cashless tipping platform TiPJAR has relaunched it’s ‘Hospitality Worker’s Emergency Fund’, enabling the UK public to donate ‘tips’ to support hospitality sector staff that are vulnerable and in need.

The decision to bring back the initiative, which is run in collaboration with Hospitality Action, comes as TiPJAR data reveals that hospitality staff are due to lose over £60m in tips during the month of December alone, amid the downturn in sales felt across the sector as a result of the impact of the Omicron Covid variant.

According to trade body UKHospitality, businesses have already lost 40-60% of December trade due to this latest wave of cancellations, no-shows and closures. Their staff are now faced with fewer shifts, less tips, and a fear over their job security.

“These statistics are crippling for the millions of workers that rely on these tips to pay their rent, feed themselves, or feed their families,” says Ben Thomas, CEO of TiPJAR.

During its previous launch, TiPJAR raised over £50,000 in urgent grant money for the hardest hit staff who were facing redundancies, job loss and financial hardship during the first lockdown.

Funds are raised using the TiPJAR platform, with Hospitality Action using its network to identify those who need help the most and giving them a grant of £250.

“We have created ‘The Hospitality Workers Emergency Fund’ to allow the kind hearted, altruistic and caring UK public to donate towards supporting the workforce our industry relies on," says James Brown, founder of TiPJAR.

While the Government’s recently announced £1bn financial package to help businesses, Brown adds that it doesn’t give staff any surety or protection.

"With Christmas only a few days away, we want to do everything we can to help. These are our people. This is our cause.”
